1. Nippon Kokan's Experimental Ship Proves Sail-Equipped Motorship Feasible

   Nippon Kokan K.K., with the Japan Marine Machinery Development Association, conducted more than two years of wind-tunnel tests, sail design and sea trials aboard the experimental ship Daioh, concluding that sail-equipped motorships using sails as auxiliary propulsion are feasible and can be operated profitably in the 10,000 to 35,000-dwt bulk carrier range.

3. Newest Waterman Steamship LASH/Containership Enters Service

   The Edward Rutledge, a LASH vessel built by Avondale Shipyards for Waterman Steamship Corporation, made her maiden voyage arrival at the Port of New York. The 40,921-dwt barge carrier serves ports along the Red Sea, Arabian Gulf, India and Pakistan.

4. Navire Linkspan To Serve Isle Of Man RO/RO Operation

   Navire Cargo Gear has released details of a portable 70-meter roll-on/roll-off linkspan being built in Finland for Douglas harbour, Isle of Man, to serve a new Isle of Man Steam Packet Company freight service from Liverpool.

8. IHI Delivers VLCC 'Nissho Maru' To Idemitsu Tanker Company

   Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries has completed the 257,882-dwt tanker Nissho Maru for Idemitsu Tanker Company, the first tanker over 200,000 dwt built by IHI since 1977, operated with a crew of only 24.

9. Swiftships Delivers Aluminum MTU-Powered Service Vessel

   Swiftships, Inc. of Morgan City has built PBR/131, a 120-foot all-aluminum general service boat owned by Mariner Equipment and operated by PBR Offshore Marine Corporation, powered by three MTU engines for speeds up to 25 knots.

10. New Drydock Installed At Todd Shipyards' New Orleans Division

    Todd Shipyards has dedicated a new 3,500-ton-lift drydock at its New Orleans Division, part of a program that includes new wharf construction and will raise division employment from 500 to about 625.
