1. SNAME — A Report On The 89th Annual Meeting

   The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers held its 89th annual meeting at the New York Hilton on November 18-20, 1981, electing four new vice presidents, presenting the Blakely Smith, Land and David W. Taylor medals, hearing Navy Secretary John Lehman as banquet speaker, awarding paper prizes and presenting fourteen technical papers.

2. Moss Rosenberg Verft Develops Energy-Saving LNG Carrier

   Moss Rosenberg Verft a.s. of Norway developed a 130,000-cubic-meter LNG carrier project designed to minimize boil-off and use a large-bore slow-speed diesel with cargo reliquefaction, promising about 36 percent fuel savings versus a steam plant and about $300,000 savings per 21-day round trip.

3. Todd-Seattle Sponsors Marine Diesel Seminar

   Todd Pacific Shipyards, Seattle Division, sponsored the first international marine diesel engine seminar on the West Coast, drawing more than 150 attendees from over 40 organizations to hear presentations by M.A.N., Sulzer, B & W and Colt Industries. Todd announced it is forming a diesel department and has signed service representative agreements with Sulzer Brothers and M.A.N./B & W Diesel.

4. Soviets Plan Nuclear Powered Merchant Ship, To Be Completed By 1984

   The USSR has launched a nuclear merchant shipbuilding program whose first ship will be a lighter carrier of more than 60,000 tons displacement, due for completion by 1984. Western observers note the problems that have plagued Soviet nuclear ships, and another icebreaker, the Rossiya, is already under construction.

5. Gulf Oil Announces Exec Assignments For Corporation And Divisions

   Gulf Oil Corporation announced a broad slate of corporate and divisional executive appointments, including M.J. Hill as corporate executive vice president in Houston and C.H. Bowman as president of Gulf Refining and Marketing Company.

6. Largest U.S.-Built Hopper Dredge Launched At Avondale Shipyards

   The Stuyvesant, the largest hopper dredge ever built in the United States, was launched at Avondale Shipyards for Stuyvesant Dredging Co., a Zapata/Boskalis Westminster partnership. The 372-foot oceangoing dredge will be operated by Williams-McWilliams Co. and is due for completion in early 1982.

7. Norcontrol To Install $3-Million Vessel Traffic System —Literature Available

   Norcontrol of Norway will install a $3-million vessel traffic control system covering the 12-mile harbor approach at Gothenburg, Sweden, using three radars, a digital scan converter and color displays, with service expected by fall 1982.

8. Utility Vessel M/V Lamnalco Mallard Delivered To Kuwait Service By HUDSHIP

   Hudson Shipbuilders, Inc. of Pascagoula, Miss., delivered the 112-foot offshore utility vessel M/V Lamnalco Mallard to Lamnalco Limited of Kuwait, the third vessel HUDSHIP has built for the owner, for service in the Arabian Gulf.

9. SNAME New York Hears Paper On Marine Gas Chemists

   The New York Metropolitan Section of SNAME heard Charles L. Keller of the National Fire Protection Service describe the duties, training and certification of marine gas chemists and how they determine whether spaces are safe for workers or hot work.

10. Sun Company, Levingston Sign Letter Of Intent For Pa. Shipyard Sale

    Sun Company, Inc. signed a letter of intent to sell the assets of its Sun Ship subsidiary in Chester, Pa., to Levingston Shipbuilding Company of Orange, Texas. Executives from both firms commented on the deal, which remains conditional on definitive agreement, government approvals and labor agreements.
